I’m Risu, a blogger who is exploring ways to enjoy sightseeing in Kyoto without spending a lot of money!
This time I’m going to introduce the Toji Junk Market!
The Junk Market is one of the most unique and fascinating events in Kyoto.
I didn’t have high expectations because it was described as junk, but I was surprised when I actually went there!
You can also visit the temple while you’re there, so it’s recommended for both sightseeing and a date!
- There are lots of bargains and it’s fun
- You can also visit the five-story pagoda
- There are also stalls and it’s lively
- It’s free to enter
The fascinating history and culture of Toji Temple
Toji Temple is a national treasure located in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City, and was founded in the Heian period.
The historical architecture harmonizes with the beautiful gardens, and the beauty of this place can be said to be the quintessence of traditional Japanese temples.
While enjoying the junk market, it was also fun to see the five-story pagoda!
Event Outline
Toji Temple’s Junk Market is held on the first Sunday of every month!
If you’re planning on visiting, we recommend checking the Toji Temple Vendor Committee’s website for the most accurate and up-to-date schedule!

Event atmosphere
Toji Junk Market is an event where antiques, handmade art, recycled goods, and more are lined up!
The venue was filled with a unique atmosphere and many stores and food stalls.
Works by local artists and creators were packed into every nook and cranny.
The products you’ll find here are all unique and hard to find in the general market!
Antique goods, handmade accessories, and items with a retro feel are all eye-catching, but the handmade crafts in particular give you a sense of the warmth of the artisans’ handiwork.
summary
What did you think of the Toji Junk Market?
It was smaller in scale than the Kobo Market, which is also held at Toji Temple on the 21st of every month, but there were plenty of eye-catching antiques and we had a great time.
Many items are reasonably priced, so it’s great that you can shop without hesitation!
