What is Honnoji Temple?

Honnoji Temple is a temple located in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture.
The current Honnoji Temple was rebuilt after it was burned down in the Battle of Honnoji, and the original building has been lost.

Apparently it was originally located in Horikawa Shijo!

Nobunaga was assassinated by Akechi Mitsuhide in the Battle of Honnoji on June 2, 1582, and Honnoji was burned down.

Afterwards, Honnoji was rebuilt and a memorial tower and tomb were built to mourn Nobunaga’s death, and the gardens and buildings attract visitors with their historical value and beauty.

In particular, a stone monument and information board have been installed at the site of the main hall, where the Battle of Honnoji took place, making it an interesting spot for history fans and tourists.

Honnoji Temple Access

Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine is conveniently located just a short walk from Kyoto City Hall Station on the Tozai Subway Line.
