Hello, I’m Risu, a blogger who loves to enjoy Kyoto without spending a lot of money!
This time I’ll be sharing my experience going to Honnoji Temple, which is famous for the Honnoji Incident!
The most famous temple in Japan?
This is the place where Oda Nobunaga was attacked by Akechi Mitsuhide.
- A famous spot that history buffs will love!
- Located in the center of Kyoto, it’s very accessible!
- It’s home to the grave of Oda Nobunaga!
- The treasure museum is filled with cultural assets, including personal belongings of Oda Nobunaga!
What is Honnoji Temple?
Honnoji Temple is a temple located in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture.
The current Honnoji Temple was rebuilt after it was burned down in the Battle of Honnoji, and the original building has been lost.
Apparently it was originally located in Horikawa Shijo!
Nobunaga was assassinated by Akechi Mitsuhide in the Battle of Honnoji on June 2, 1582, and Honnoji was burned down.
Afterwards, Honnoji was rebuilt and a memorial tower and tomb were built to mourn Nobunaga’s death, and the gardens and buildings attract visitors with their historical value and beauty.
In particular, a stone monument and information board have been installed at the site of the main hall, where the Battle of Honnoji took place, making it an interesting spot for history fans and tourists.
Honnoji Temple Access
Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine is conveniently located just a short walk from Kyoto City Hall Station on the Tozai Subway Line.

Honnoji Temple Review
Here’s a review with photos!
First, enter from the Teramachi-dori entrance, which is just a short walk from Kyoto City Hall Station, and you will see this gate on your left!
It feels strange to suddenly appear in a busy shopping street.
It seems that not many people know that Honnoji Temple is located right in the heart of Kyoto!
This is something that will surprise tourists who don’t live in Kyoto!
At first you might wonder if this is really it?, but there are clearly characters in front of the gate that read “Daihonzan Honnoji.”
There is also a bronze statue of Nichiren Daishonin in front of the gate.
You often see people taking commemorative photos in front of the statue!
As soon as you pass through the gate, you’ll see the main shrine standing majestically before you!
Although it was a Sunday, there were not many people, so it was a nice atmosphere to leisurely look around the main hall!
And going further in, you’ll find Nobunaga-kobyo!
It’s pronounced Nobunaga-kobyo.
It’s the grave of Oda Nobunaga.
There was also an offering box.
It seems that Nobunaga’s sword is kept here!
There was also a water basin nearby. (And a memorial tower behind it!)
This is the mausoleum of Nichiren Daibosatsu, the founder of our sect.
There are also many other samurai graves!
By the way, there was also a goshuin stamp booth near the entrance!
Furthermore, near the entrance is the Daihoden Treasure Museum.
Apparently you can see cultural assets such as Nobunaga’s belongings!
It seems that various events are held depending on the time!
It looked interesting, but…
The admission fee is 700 yen, and the concept is to enjoy it for free, so I decided to skip it this time. Lol
Maybe I’ll try going in someday.
Summary: Honnoji Review
That wraps up the review!
I was surprised to find the famous Honnoji Temple standing in a shopping district in the middle of town, but once inside, the atmosphere was completely different and quiet.
The temple grounds are not particularly large, but they have a real charm to them!
If you like history, this is a must-visit spot!
It’s easily accessible, so we recommend combining it with a stroll around Teramachi-dori, which is right in front of you!
Please come and visit it once!
