Hello, I’m Risu, a blogger who loves to enjoy Kyoto without spending a lot of money!
This time I went to Keage Incline, a photogenic Kyoto landmark!
It was probably my first time walking on train tracks!
I felt the charming atmosphere of Kyoto.
- You can take amazing photos on the tracks!
- Experience nature with cherry blossoms and autumn leaves throughout the seasons!
- An area with many tourist attractions nearby!
What is Keage Incline?
First of all, what is the Keage Incline?
It’s a strange name, so at first you probably won’t know what it is.
Keage → place name
Incline → incline railway
In other words, it’s an incline railway in a place called Keage.
An incline railway is a railroad that transports cargo on an inclined road surface!
The inclined railway is 582m long and was the longest in the world at the time of its construction.
The line is now abandoned, and the public is free to walk along the tracks.
What’s more, in spring, cherry blossoms bloom on both sides of the tracks, making it the perfect place for cherry blossom viewing!
It was designated a national historic site in 1996, and is rich in nature, with cherry blossoms in the spring, autumn leaves in the fall, and fresh greenery in the summer.
It is a spot where you can feel both history and nature at the same time.
フォトジェニックなスポットとしても有名だね!
If you want to experience the atmosphere in a quiet environment, we recommend winter when there are fewer tourists!
- I want to take amazing photos!
- I want to experience Kyoto’s history!
- I want to enjoy cherry blossom viewing under the beautiful cherry blossoms!

Access to Keage Incline
If you take the train, it’s about a 7-minute walk from Keage Station on the Tozai Subway Line, or from Okazaki Hoshojicho Bus Stop.
There are many tourist spots in the area, such as Heian Shrine, Kyocera Museum of Art, and Nanzenji Temple, so it’s also recommended to walk from those areas!
The surrounding area is full of streets that let you feel the atmosphere of Kyoto, so it’s nice to start walking from anywhere.
It might be nice to take a stroll from around Gion!
However, there is no bicycle or car parking area, so if you are coming by bicycle or car, be sure to park in a nearby parking lot!

Keage Incline reviews
So here are my impressions after going there!
First, a view of the Keage Incline from above.
From above, it looks just like a train track. . . lol
It was a bit strange to see people walking on the tracks…lol
What’s more, I went there in winter. There were no cherry blossoms or autumn leaves, and all I could see was the train tracks.
The clouds look a bit suspicious.
However, when I got off the train, I was moved by the mysterious feeling!
The special feeling of walking on the train tracks, and the atmosphere of the trees and train tracks, made me realize just how wonderful this place is!
It’s not often you get the experience of walking on railroad tracks.
Because it was winter, there were fewer tourists and I was able to enjoy the quiet atmosphere, which was actually a good thing.
Of course the cherry blossoms and autumn leaves are beautiful, but winter has its own charms too!
The cobblestones laid over the railroad tracks create an indescribable atmosphere!
There were also restored bogies and boats on display along the tracks.
Also the description.
Apparently they transported 220,000 tons of cargo per year!
It brings back images of that time.
And best of all, it has the perfect atmosphere for a date.
How about standing on the tracks together and taking some great photos?
Apparently it’s popular to wear a kimono and take photos here!
