What is Nanzenji?
Nanzenji is the main temple of the Nanzenji sect of Rinzai sect in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City, and is a historic temple that has been designated as an important cultural property of Japan.
The temple was opened in 1291 by the Chinese Zen monk Soseki Muso at the behest of Emperor Kameyama.
It is known as a place for rigorous Zen training and as a place that had a great influence on the development of Japanese Zen culture.
There are many attractions such as Suirokaku and gardens!
If you make a reservation, you can also experience zazen!
Nanzenji Access
Nanzen-ji Temple is about a 10-minute walk from Keage Station on the Tozai Municipal Subway Line, and is close to the center of Kyoto, making it easily accessible.
There is a parking lot, so you can go by car, but it can be full during the spring cherry blossom season and autumn foliage season, so we recommend going by bus or train!

Nanzenji Review
Now, we will introduce the review with photos! (This is only an introduction to areas that can be accessed for free)
First, from Keage Station, go through a spot called Nejiri Manpo and go north along the Keage Incline, and you will arrive at the entrance to Nanzenji Temple!
It’s good to enjoy each spot together.
(Nejiri Manpo and Keage Incline are both free spots!)
I went during the cherry blossom season, so there were a lot of people!
And when you pass through the entrance gate, it looks like this!
The precincts are spacious!
There was a huge garden with a variety of plants!
The small waterway has an indescribable atmosphere.
I went during the cherry blossom season, so the cherry blossoms were in full bloom!
Temple and cherry blossoms.
How photogenic!
There seemed to be a fee to enter the temple, so I skipped it. lol
I was very happy just to be able to take a photo! lol
And as we continue to advance along the quaint road…
There are temples and nature that catch your eye here and there.
My heart will be washed~
The clear water in the canal is also nice.
As you go deeper, there is an open area…
This Suirokaku, the symbol of Nanzenji, appears at the back of the square!
It was so powerful!
It’s like the world of Ghibli!
This canal was built to supply water from Lake Biwa to Kyoto City.
The area under the waterway is famous as a photo spot!
I took a photo that looks great too! lol
And when you climb the stairs amidst many plants,…
Another sight surrounded by nature!
This is the upper part of Suirokaku.
There was still a lot of water flowing!
Here you can also take great photos that are one with nature.
Since she’s wearing a kimono, she’s wearing it here as well. . lol
By the way, if you walk along this waterway, it will lead you all the way to the Keage Incline!
After leaving Suirokaku, I wandered around elsewhere. .
The combination of green and water is so wonderful.
The combination of cherry blossoms and temples is also wonderful. .
However, the cherry blossoms are beautiful!
The nature of Nanzenji is amazing. .
I bet the autumn leaves are beautiful too!
Even just a plain road can be a relaxing spot.
Personally, I recommend walking around the large temple grounds for free and experiencing nature rather than spending money to go inside the temple!
This natural charm is what makes Nanzenji so great.
You can watch this for free!
まとめ : 南禅寺 レビュー
So, that’s it for the Nanzenji review!
The garden was beautiful, but the most impressive thing was Suirokaku.
That view of the world is personally my favorite spot in Kyoto!
I was exposed to a lot of negative ions!
My heart has been cleansed
It was a wonderful spot full of nature!
Please come and visit it along with the nearby Nejirimanpo and Keage Incline!
